Dorothy Mae Bishop

May 27, 1929 ~ February 3, 2016 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Dorothy Mae Bishop

Dorothy Mae Bishop, age 86, of Mt. Carmel, IL passed away at her residence on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, surrounded by family.

The daughter of William J. and Bertha (Neu) Raber, Dorothy was born on Monday, May 27, 1929, in Browns, IL.

After graduating from Mt. Carmel High School in 1946; Dorothy traveled by train to Nebraska to continue her education in Aviation Control.  She then moved to Evansville, Indiana, and enjoyed staying at the YWCA while working at Beard’s Sporting Goods.  Dorothy married the love of her life, Dr. Leo M. Bishop, on Saturday, December 15, 1951 at Frieden’s Church in Wabash County. The couple settled in Mt. Carmel where they were blessed with four children; Rodney, Sandra, Ronda and Darcy.

Dorothy was a devoted and loving mother. She loved holidays and family get-togethers; any chance to spend time with her family was important to her. Dorothy would spend hours cooking and preparing for her company.

Dorothy never knew a stranger and was a kind-hearted lady who always saw the best in everyone she met.   She enjoyed golfing with friends and family.  She kept active in her community through Alpha Masters Sorority for over 60 years, and Evangelical United Methodist Church, where she taught kindergarten Sunday School classes for over 40 years.  In 1981, she began her own rental property business and managed a multitude of properties in Mt. Carmel.  She was active in the care and maintenance of the homes until her passing.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Wilburn (Henrietta) Raber and Earl (Virginia) Raber.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Leo, their four children: Rodney (Cindy) Bishop, Sandra (Brian) Mayard, Ronda (Russ) Alcorn, and Darcy (Gary) Kane, and by her eight grandchildren: Ashley (Jay) Cushman, Nick (Rachel) Alcorn, Brittany (Daniel) Cox, Cassie (Dan) Van Alstine, Brian Alcorn, Caitlin Alcorn, Alicia Kane and Jake (Alexa) Bishop. She was a very special grandma to her five great-grandchildren: Violet, Emily and Bridgette Van Alstine, Brady Cox and June Alcorn.

The family would like to thank the Celtic Hospice group for their care and support.
