Obituary

Martha E. (Betty) Witters-Myers, 99, formerly of Cahokia, IL residing in Mt. Carmel, IL and Marion, IL, peacefully passed away at her home on Sunday, November 6, 2022 surrounded by her loving family.

Betty was born on February 6, 1923, the daughter of Paul and Nana Goin of Dahlgren, IL. Betty was first married to Charles B. Witters, who preceded her in death on December 11, 1962. Betty married Charlie A. Myers on April 5, 1969.

Charles & Betty Witters had three children together; Nancy (Bob) Gryzmala of Marion, IL; C. Michael (Diane) Witters of Mt. Carmel, IL; and Barbara (Stephen) Hantman of St. Louis, MO. Betty was initially a homemaker, leading Cub Scout packs & Brownie groups, sewing clothes for her children & attending all school functions.  In 1960, the family moved from Cahokia to Mt. Prospect, IL for Charles’ work with the Department of Labor.    In 1963, after the death of Charles, the family moved back from Mt. Prospect, IL to Cahokia where, in 1964 she began her second career as a secretary for School District 187. She eventually retired from the School District, as secretary to the Superintendent, in 1985.

Betty and Charlie moved from Cahokia, IL in 1995 to Mt. Carmel, IL, where they built a home near the golf course. This was a longtime dream of Charlie’s. They spent their retirement years, Charlie playing golf, Betty buying & selling on eBay, and both attending auctions together. Betty took computer classes at Wabash Valley College when she was 70 years old so that she could stay on top of world events, dabble in photography & work on her eBay.  Some of Betty & Charlies’ happiest times were when the family all got together, especially for holidays.  Charlie preceded Betty in death on February 16, 2005.  Her daughter, Barbara, also preceded her on November 13, 2021.

Along with Betty’s surviving children, left to cherish her memory are 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.

Despite being wheelchair bound for the last 16 years of her life, Betty always remained positive, focused, and intent on enjoying her life and doing whatever she could for others. She remained bright and articulate until the end, and was still actively surfing the internet and listening to Irish music on her Dublin Ireland radio station until several days before her death. Her life was a blessing to her friends, close in family, and especially to her extended family who were always first in her thoughts.

No formal services will be conducted. A memorial service will be held on November 19, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Dahlgren, Illinois.
