John L. Bratton, 78, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois passed away peacefully at Ascension St. Vincent in Evansville, Indiana on October 21, 2025.

He was born on May 7, 1947, in Mount Carmel, Illinois to parents John Nelson and Martha Lucille (Henson) Bratton. He married Virginia M. “Ginger” Bratton on August 23, 1985 by Pastor John Yarbor. They enjoyed 40 years together.

John loved his family very much, and after the passing of his parents he took care of his brother, Roy, for many years. He enjoyed being involved with church at Heartland Worship Center, and working with the Bridges of Hope. He also enjoyed golfing and was a railroad conductor for over 20 years.

He is survived by his children, Meredith (Rodney) Newton of Princeton, IN, Margie (Gary) Krug of Allendale, IL, Michelle (Terry) Holcomb of Owensville, IN, and Jimmy Mahan of Evansville, IN; and grandchildren, Brittany (Logan) Keil, Taylor Newton, Gary Lee (Michael) Perry, Bethany (Robert) Pack, Nick Perry, Ryleigh (Logan Jones) Holcomb, Ali (Eric) DeLong, James Mahan, Kasey Mahan; several great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild on the way.

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Ginger, brother Roy Bratton, half-sister Betty Dardeen, and grandson William Lee Timberlake.

Per John’s wishes, there will be no formal services held.

Memorials can be made to Bridges of Hope food bank and can be brought or sent to the funeral home at P.O. Box 397 Mt. Carmel, IL 62863.
