Obituary

Harold H. Hughes, 85, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at IU Health West Hospital, Avon, Indiana.

 

Harold was born January 9, 1936 in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, the son of Edward Hamilton and Betty (Speakman) Hughes.

 

He was a member of UMWA Local 5179 for fifty years, retiring from the Ziesler Mine.  He was an oil field worker for years and an avid fisherman and hunter and mushroom hunter. He loved taking road trips, going where he wanted to go, especially visiting family. He was past President of the Moose Lodge in Mt. Carmel.

 

Those left to cherish his memory are his children; Serena (Jeff) Gray of Oakland City, IN, Eddie (Melissa) Hughes of Francisco, IN and Patricia Baxley of Patton, IL, and stepdaughter, Tammy Pargin of Pearl, IL. His eleven grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren meant the world to him, they called him Papaw, Pops and Poppy.

 

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, son Harold Dean Hughes; siblings Ellamae, Coralee, Georgia, Alvin, Maycel, James, Lucille, Willard and two half-brothers and one-half sister.

 

Visitation for family and friends will be Monday, May 24, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home. There will be a Graveside Service and Burial at 1:30 p.m. at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Carmel.

 

COVID-19 precautions, wearing of face coverings, social distancing and use of hand sanitizer is recommended.
