Gary W. Fortner, 73, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2023, at Deaconess Gateway in Newburgh, Indiana, surround by the love of his family.
Services will be held Friday, June 9, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel of Short-Cunningham Funeral Home, 527 N. Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois, with Pastor Mark Richison officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery, 1827 College Drive, Mt. Carmel, Illinois.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 8, 2023, in the Chapel of Short-Cunningham Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. In honor of their father, the family asks that you dress in maroon and gold for visitation and the service.
Gary was born March 20, 1950, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, the son of Jesse A. Fortner and Winnie (Sisk) Brown. He was a graduate of Mt. Carmel High School and received an associate degree from Wabash Valley College. Surviving are his children Lois (Robert) Lowe of Evansville, Indiana, and Zachary (Amanda) Fortner of Wadesville, Indiana; and, eight grandchildren Taylor (Cody) Williams, Trais Lowe and Adrienne Lowe, Jace, Tatum, Blakely, Kyson, and Maverick Fortner. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Mary Adams, Ann Elliott, Eddie, and David Fortner.
Gary was a devoted member of Parkview Christian Church. He retired after thirty-four years working for Duke Energy. Because of his love for children, Gary dedicated many years in Mt. Carmel to coaching Mt. Carmel Little League, Mt. Carmel Aces Football and Mt. Carmel Junior Aces Football. He welcomed the ON1 ministry with open arms, enthusiasm, and support. Gary’s heart was for God and the kids. His greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren and family. He will be greatly missed.
