Dorothy Jane Mowatt Obituary

Dorothy Jane (Zimmerman) Mowatt, 88, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully with her family at her side, Monday, September 23, 2019, at River Oaks Health Campus in Princeton, Indiana. She was born August 12, 1931, in Princeton, Indiana, the eldest of two daughters to Wilhelmina Marie (Steckler) and Peter Jacob Hinde Zimmerman, both have preceded her in death.

 

She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School in 1945, Mt. Carmel High School in 1949, and St. Mary of Woods College, Terre Haute, Indiana in 1953.

 

She married William “Bill” D. Mowatt on June 9, 1956, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, he preceded her in death after 58 years of marriage on April 27, 2015.

 

She is survived by four daughters Mina Nolan and her husband John of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Moya Thompson of Jacksonville, Florida, Misa Thomas of Jacksonville, Florida, Madea Gordon and her husband Damon of Yulee, Florida, grandsons Jacob Sanders, John Matthew (Jean) Nolan, Jordan Sanders, Cory Nolan, Jeffrey Beluscak, Zachary Thompson, Hunter Gordon, granddaughter Tess Gordon, great granddaughters Deidre and Brynne Nolan, great grandson John Thomas Nolan. Brother in law and wife, Thomas and Diane Mowatt of Evansville, Indiana, nieces, Michele (Hayes) and Bryan Loeffler and Stephanie (Mowatt) and Bob Carlson.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother in law, Marilyn and Don Hayes, and nephew Steve Mowatt.

 

She began her teaching career in 1954 at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, where she was the first lay teacher and taught multiple grades each year.   In 1968 she began teaching kindergarten at South School in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, until her retirement in 1989.

 

She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Daughters of Isabella, Wabash County Historical Society, Wabash County Museum and Foundation, Main Street Mt. Carmel, and various other social organizations.

 

Over her lifetime she was very passionate about her family genealogy and spent countless hours compiling historical information for future generations. She also enjoyed knitting and is well known for her hand knitted Christmas stockings.

 

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, September 28, 2019, at 12:00 noon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 125 W. 5th Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.  

 

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2019, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church prior to the Funeral Mass.
