Betty Compton Obituary

Betty Lou Johnson Compton passed away on November 11, 2019, formerly of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, in Rockwall, Texas.

 She was a resident of Lakeshore Assisted Living for the past six years.

Betty was born on November 16, 1924 in Birds, Illinois, to Lyle B. Johnson and Beatrice L. Sandifer Johnson.  At a young age she moved with her parents to Mt. Carmel, Illinois. In her younger days she worked at Thordeson Meissner during the war.  She married, had two children, and became a single mother. She made many sacrifices along the way. 

Betty married Herbert D. Compton in April of 1967 in Mt. Carmel. They were happily married almost 50 years and had a wonderful life together.  Betty and Herb retired from Snap-on On Tools and spent many wonderful years traveling extensively, spending many winters in Florida and Texas.  They made many wonderful friends along the way.  She enjoyed spending time with her children and their spouses and many grandchildren. Herbert and Betty resided at Fox Ridge Manor in Vincennes, Indiana until Herbert’s death in 2014.

Betty was a great cook and loved to fish, spending many hours fishing on Mesa Lake while living there for several years. She enjoyed embroidery, needlepoint, traveling, and just having fun! She was a member of the VFW and the American Legion Auxiliaries. After Herbert’s passing, Betty moved to Rockwall, Texas to be near her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed six years residing at Lakeshore Assisted Living in Rockwall, where she made many friends.   She had many wonderful years to spend with family and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband Herbert, daughter Pamela Pierson Treni, and her parents.

Left to mourn her passing are her daughters, Sandra Heflin (Jerry) and LeeAnn Macy (Kevin), stepdaughter Sally Wilkerson (Jerry), sons Steven Compton (Margaret) and Scott Compton (Marilyn). She leaves behind grandchildren:  Keesha Peterson (Chad), Christy McPherson (Doug), Ashley Burns (Bruce), Erin Dale (Rusty), Brett Heflin (Elizabeth), Derrick Compton, Drew Compton, David Compton, and Sean Macy (Katie).  Also Jackie Slatter (William), Scott Wilkerson (Sue),  She is also survived by greatgrandchildren Allie McPherson, Ethan , Brayden, and Trevor Peterson, Clayton Dale, Bruce Burns, Ryder Elms, and Emmitt Heflin as well as Katelyn East, Taylor Payton (Tim), Jordan Miller (Tabby), Jared Wilkerson (Ali), Aaron Wilkerson (Amy).   In addition, she is survived by five great, great grandchildren.  She also leaves behind several in-laws as well as many, many friends.

Friends and family may gather for a visitation on Monday, June 7, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home, with funeral services immediately following. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery.
