Vada Juanita (Griggs) Doty

Vada Juanita (Griggs) Doty of Kankakee, IL passed away peacefully in her sleep at St. Mary’s Hospital on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. She was 90 years old.

Vada was born on April 6, 1927 in Lawrence County, IL.  She was one of seven children born to Everette Griggs and Lola Bernice Tyre.  She married Philip Doty of Mt. Carmel, IL in 1947.   Vada and Philip enjoyed collecting antiques and traveling to antique shows and flea markets.  For years they owned and operated an antique store on Court Street in Kankakee, IL.  Vada loved caring for and playing with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She was an avid backyard gardener and wonderful home cook for her family.  She was an active member of the Church of Christ in Bradley, IL for many years.  She will be remembered by those who knew and loved her as hard-working, extremely patient, kind, caring and selfless. 

Vada is survived by her children, Carolyn Sue Bessette of Bradley, IL and Gregory Dean Doty of Kankakee, IL; her two grandchildren, Tracie (Mark) Saffell and Diane Neese; and her four great-grandchildren, Ryan Neese, Mark O’Connell, PJ O’Connell and Emma Barnes.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Philip Doty; her son-in-law, William Neese; one sister, Vera Henderson; and her parents, Everette Griggs and Lola Bernice (Tyre) Griggs.

A visitation is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home, 527 N. Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, IL.  The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Michael Davis officiating.   Vada will be laid to rest beside her husband, Philip, at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Carmel, IL.  All are welcome to attend and celebrate Vada's life.
