Ruth Marie Buchanan

Ruth Marie Buchanan, 88, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at Oakview Heights Continuous Care.

She was born September 20, 1928, in Lawrenceville, Illinois, the daughter of Samuel Hughey Milligan and Clemma (Fry) Milligan Lewis.  Ruth married Robert Buchanan March 2, 1952, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. 

Ruth was a member of the First Christian Church.  She enjoyed crafts, ceramic painting and sewing.  One of her fondest hobbies was gardening.  At one time she cared for 27 rose bushes.  Ruth also worked with the First Christian Church Cookie Day.  For years she assisted Dr. Burkett at his dental office.  After her children graduated, Ruth went to work as a cashier at Mt. Carmel Red and White.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Robert, of 65 years; children, Gregory S. Buchanan and wife Cindy, and Erin K. Buchanan, both of Mt. Carmel; one grandchild, Matthew Scott Buchanan and a great grandchild, Channing Lee Buchanan; niece, Ernestine Barger and her husband James and their family, Adrienne, Mike, Joseph and Norah Robinson, Elizabeth Lawalin (Eric Kenney) and Steven Barger; great nephew,  Sam and Leann Smith; and, great great niece, Anna Smith.

Proceeding her in death were her parents; son, Bryan Buchanan; sister, Betty J. Smith; brother-in-law, Elmer Smith; and, nephew, Ron Smith.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Highland Memorial Cemetery, 1827 College Drive, Mt. Carmel, Illinois, with Jackie Summers officiating. 

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the First Christian Church Cookie Day Fund.  Envelopes will be available at the service and at Short Funeral Home.
