Mary Ellen McAtee, 79, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, peacefully passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 19, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home, 527 N. Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois.  Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Mary Ellen McAtee, 79, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, peacefully passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

She was born March 26, 1938, in Wabash County, the daughter of Harry LeRoy and Carrie Mora (Voigt) Miller.  Mary married Joseph “Joe” McAtee on March 20, 1992 in Royal Oak, Michigan.  She worked as a news clerk for the Observer in Birmingham, Michigan. 

Mary was a member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church.  On Monday nights she enjoyed going to Hogg Heaven Restaurant and listening to the musicians play.  She liked working in her yard, trying new recipes and reading the Bible.  Above all, Mary loved spending time with her family and her church family.  

Left to cherish her memory is two granddaughters, Erin Kierczak of Warren, Michigan and Melissa Svacha of Roseville, Michigan; a sister, Evelyn Lankford of Princeton, Indiana; four great grandchildren; and eighteen nieces and nephews.

Preceding Mary in death were her parents; husband; son, Jeffrey Lefler; sister, Eva Jean Cravens; brothers, Roland Bailey, Jr. and Jack Bailey; and the grandparents she adored, Henry and Sarah Voigt.

In keeping with her wishes, she will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
