Marjorie Elizabeth (Pool) Tennis, 99, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2017, at River Oaks Health Campus in Princeton, Indiana, surrounded by her loving family.

 

            Born in Wabash County, Illinois, on March 15, 1918, Marjorie was the eldest daughter of William Frederick Pool and Dolice Viola (Groff) Pool.  A housewife, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother, she always considered her family to collectively be the most important part of her long life.  Marjorie was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing and gardening.  She was fondly known for baking delicious cinnamon rolls and angel food cakes.

 

            Marjorie was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella, and the Friendsville Household Science Club and Homemakers Extension.  On August 6, 1940, Marjorie married Wabash County farmer Eugene Tennis, who preceded her in death in 2010.  In addition to her husband of nearly 70 years, other family members preceding her to heaven were her parents, a daughter, Virginia Schmitt, grandson Jeffrey James, sister Carolyn Dunkel and two infant sisters.

 

            Survivors include her four children, Janet James (Marion R.) of Bristow, Indiana; Charles Tennis (Janice) of Mt. Carmel; Mary Ellen Tennis of Evansville, Indiana; and Barbara Peterson (Kirk) of Haubstadt, Indiana. 

 

            Other surviving family includes ten grandchildren:  David James (Norma) of Kalispell, Montana; Daniel James (Karen) of Hoagland, Indiana; Cheryl James Kingsbury (Jeff) of Carmel, Indiana; Thomas Schmitt, Jr., of Collinsville, Illinois; Susan Schmitt Schaefer (Jeff) of Glen Carbon, Illinois; Melissa Schmitt and Michael Schmitt, both of Edwardsville, Illinois; Jana Tennis Marriott (Matthew) of Browns, Illinois; Ericka Peterson Obert (Klint) of Fort Branch, Indiana; and Alysa Peterson of Nashville, Tennessee; plus 17 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; and son-in-law Thomas Schmitt, Sr., of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

 

            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery following the service.

 

            Visitation is from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. 

 

            Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions St. Mary’s School General Fund.  Envelopes will be available at the church or at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home.
