Hershel D Spruell

Hershel D. Spruell, 91, of Mt. Carmel, passed away Friday, April 14, 2017 at Meadowood Nursing Home in Grayville, Illinois.

He was born Tuesday, April 28, 1925 in Edwards County, Illinois to John A. and Lucy A. (Bunting) Spruell.  Hershel married Barbara Joan Witsman on October 14, 1950 at the First Church of God in Mt. Carmel. Together they had three children; Jeff, Rhonda Jo, and Connie.

Hershel, an avid horseman, rode many a mile on his horse Thunder. He served his county in the U.S. Army during WW II and was a lifetime member of VFW and American Legion.  He worked for the State of Illinois in Forestry. 

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Jeff, and wife Sheri  Spruell, Rhonda J. Skees-Baker and husband Bob Baker, and Connie and her husband John Shain; five  grandchildren  who call him “Papaw”, Natalie (Greg) Wilkinson, Jana (Beau) Hadra, Elliott (Laura Dudoit) Spruell, Cody Skees, and Madison (Greg) Maves; great grandchildren Triston and Chase Wilkinson,  Jonathon Bader, Karis and Bode Hadra, Lyla and Olivia Maves; Adalyah, Ariel and Yehoshua Dudoit; niece Lynette Lustfeldt and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Lucy; wife of fifty-three years, Barbara Joan; brother Jewell Spruell, twin sister Helen Johnson, son-in-law George Skees and niece Jewell Lee Higginson.

The family and friends will gather Monday, April 17, 2017 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. for Visitation at Short Funeral Home in Mt. Carmel. The Funeral Service will be Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery.
