Donald Tombaugh Obituary

Dr. Donald (Doc) Tombaugh, 93, of Mt. Carmel, IL passed away on Friday, May 25, 2018, surrounded by his loving family at his residence.

He was born on June 11, 1924, in Mt. Carmel, IL ; one of four boys to Percy Jacob and Jennie “Price” Tombaugh.  Donald graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1942. He continued his education at Chicago College of Optometry, graduating in February 1951. Donald belonged to Tomb and Key Honor Society. He was the last living Charter Member of the Mt. Carmel Lions Club. Through the years he was very active in Boy Scouts, Little League, and Mt. Carmel Boosters Club. Donald was a Lifetime Member of the VFW.  He started the filming of the Mt. Carmel Aces Football and continued that for several years.

On April 16, 1948, in Mt .Carmel at Evangelical United Brethren Church he married Roma Jean Smith and they enjoyed seventy years together. They had three children, Peggy Jean, Ann Marie and Diane Tombaugh. Living in Mt. Carmel he was a member of EUM Church and owned and operated the office of Dr. D.R. Tombaugh Optometrist for forty-two years.

Donald served his country in the Navy Air Corp. He was stationed onboard the USS Ommaney Bay when it sunk in the Philippines.

Donald is survived by his wife Roma Jean; two daughters, Peggy Jean and husband Joe Caldari of Ormond Beach, FL, and Ann Marie and husband Steve Schurman of Mt. Carmel; grandchildren, Jessica Jean and husband Alex Schalasky, Jordan Craig and wife Chelsey Schurman, Amanda Caldari and Joey Caldari; great granddaughter, Amelia Rose Schalasky.

Preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Jennie; brothers, Sheldon , Paul and John; infant granddaughter Charissa Tombaugh  Johnson; infant daughter, Diane Tombaugh.

Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday May 30, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. in Highland Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Carmel, IL 62863. There will be no visitation prior to the graveside.

Memorials may be made EUM Church or the Mt. Carmel Lions Club, envelopes will be available at the graveside service .
