Vernon Eugene Groff, 82, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at Oakview Heights Continuous Care and Rehab Center.
Vernie was born on Tuesday, May 29, 1934, in Wabash County, Illinois, the second child of Raymond and Vergie Lucille (Doty) Groff.
He was a loving son and beloved brother and uncle. Vernie did not know a stranger and had many friends. He was raised on a farm and helped take care of the animals. Vernie adored all the animals, but his favorites were the horses and cows. Farm tractors held a special fascination for Vernie. He loved to play the French harp, banjo and guitar. His favorite song was “Precious Memories.” The family loved to sing it with him. Of all his many affections, he cherished his Oakview family and being at WAVE.
Left to cherish his memories is his sister, Wanda Bean and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Vernie in death was his parents; siblings, Neva Chynoweth, Faye Wetter, Florence McClanahan, Bill Groff and Larry Groff.
Visitation will be Sunday, September 11, 2016, from 2:00 to 3:00 at the Chapel of Short Funeral Home, 527 N Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois. The graveside service will follow immediately after at the Lick Prairie Cemetery with Pastor Bailey Pearson officiating. Vernie will be laid to rest next to his parents.
