Nile S. Deputy

April 6, 1926 ~ April 8, 2016 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Nile Deputy, 90, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2016 at Oakview Heights in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.

He was born on Tuesday, April 6, 1926 in Wabash County, Illinois, the oldest child of James and Pauline (Ankenbrandt) Deputy.

Nile has been heard to say the greatest thing he ever did was the day he married Joanne Baker on Thursday, January 12, 1950.  They had 2 wonderful children, Steve (Lynn) Deputy and Elaine(Lee) Blum;  4 lovely grandchildren, Brian (Jamie) Deputy, Matthew Deputy, Natalie Blum, Ryan (Kim) Blum; and 3 great grandchildren, Tyler, Dylan, and Nathan Deputy; siblings, Dorothy “Dot” Wahler, Delores “Dee” Rafferty and James Deputy; several nieces and nephews.  He loves them all.

He was preceeded in death by his parents and 2 sisters Belle Beuligmann and Mary Cunningham.

He grew up during the Depression and one of his expressions was “When I was a kid I was so poor I couldn’t pay attention.”

He spent his entire life in Wabash County, with the exception of two years in the Army during World War II.

He had taken his physical exam before he graduated from high school and was drafted immediately after graduation.

He trained in Ft. Riley, Kansas as a tank driver.  He crossed the ocean on the Queen Mary with 14,000 other boys, was on the front lines in the Battle of the Bulge on January 12, 1945.  He drove a tank in Gen. Patton’s Division.

He said the most exciting day of his life was the day World War II ended, he knew it was over and he could get back home to his loving family.

He started his working career as a kid working in the neighbor’s garden for 25 cents a day.  After the service he rough necked on several drilling rigs and then sold drilling bits for many years. In 1968, he started his own Volkswagon repair business which he ran until 1973, when he went to work for Public Service Indiana until his retirement in 1987.  In his later years he worked part time at Short-Cunningham Funeral Homes, a job he really enjoyed.

As a young man he raced go-carts, enjoyed boating and water skiing.  Later he enjoyed riding his high bicycle in parades.  He also played many rounds of golf.  He also liked a good joke, liked to laugh and have a good time.

He has said many times, “I appreciate the Good Lord letting me have a good life, a good wife, a nice family and a comfortable home.  I had a lot to be thankful for
