Marie B. (Speedy) Smith

            Marie B. Smith, 92, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.

            She was born April 13, 1924, the oldest of seven children, to Floyd and Dimple (Essary) Speedy, in Crawford County, IN.

            Marie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel.  She was a graduate of Mt. Carmel High School in 1943.  During WWII, Marie worked at Republic Aviation (now Tri-State Areo), in Evansville, IN, as a riveter for the P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft.  On June 5, 1945, she married Everett F. Smith.  He preceded her in death on October 21, 1981.  Marie was a nursing assistant for 45 years, 30 of which was at Wabash General Hospital, where she retired.  She enjoyed reading, quilting and traveling.  Some of her most memorable travels were to Hawaii, Costa Rica, Wisconsin and the trips she took with the bank. She loved her water aerobics group and her pets.

            Left to cherish her memories is her children, Carol and husband Jim Drayton of St. Germain, Wisconsin, Rose and husband Jim Turpin, Becky and husband John Cowling, Dave (Kay Rutter) Smith and Jeff and wife Trish Smith, all of Mt. Carmel; siblings, Louise Pollock, Marcella Sweeny, and, Ron and wife Linda Speedy;  grandchildren, Greg (Belinda) Williams, Brad (Hollie) Williams, Eric (Lori) Turpin, Angel Clower, Chris (Katrina) Newkirk, Jake (Samantha) Newkirk, Andrew Smith, Matthew Smith, Kyle Smith and Amy (Rusty) Hinshaw; great-grandchildren, Nathan (Aoi) Williams, Marissa Williams, Whitney Turpin, Lilia Newkirk, Ruby, Aleah, Hattie and Asa Newkirk, Nicholas Williams, Zakery Taylor and Madison Miller.

            Preceding Marie in death were her parents; husband; brothers, Bud Speedy, Glenn Speedy and Ed Speedy.

            Visitation will take place Monday, July 25, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home, 527 N. Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois, with funeral services immediately following at 1:00 p.m. also in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home.  Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery next to her husband.

            Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Wabash County Animal Shelter Buddies.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
