Dorothy Dale Hughes, 86, of Allendale, Illinois, passed away Friday, October 14, 2016 at River Oaks Health Campus in Princeton, IN.
Dorothy was born April 3, 1930 in St. Francisville, IL, the only child of Cleo J. Williams and Lucretia (Fyffe) Williams.
She married Tommy Schafer Hughes in St. Francisville, IL on December 24, 1947. Tom preceded her in death on December 30, 2002. She graduated from St. Francisville High School in 1948 where she was Homecoming Queen her junior year.
Dorothy enjoyed playing the piano. She taught lessons and played for many years at the St. Francisville First Christian Church beginning at age 10, then as the church pianist at Allendale First Christian Church. She also was the accompanist for the Allendale School music program contestants for many years.
She was a homemaker and a bookkeeper for her husband‘s excavating business. She worked for several years in the office at Meissner’s. Dorothy worked for 19 years and then retired from the Senior Nutrition Program in Allendale.
Dorothy was a member and Past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Allendale, and also a member of Allendale Ruritanettes. She served as Girl Scout Leader for her daughter Carolyn’s Troop.
Those left to cherish her memory include children, John M. and wife Vickie Hughes of Evansville IN, Sharon and husband Gene Gehret of Mt. Carmel, Tommy Dale and wife Peggy Hughes of Allendale, and Carolyn and husband Brad Jeffers of Eagle CO; 14 grandchildren, Curt Hughes, Francie Billings, Jill Hinrichs, Jacob Gehret, Jordyn Gehret, Shannon Dunn, Jonathan Hughes, Bethany, Brooke and Reana Ortez, and Kainan, Gabrielle, Luke and Josiah Jeffers; 10 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, June and husband Bill Quick.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Tommy and great-grandson, Matthew Hughes.
Visitation for family and friends with be Tuesday, October 18, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home, 527 N Mulberry St., Mt. Carmel, IL
The funeral service will be Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Allendale First Christian Church, North 2nd at Oak Street, Allendale IL. Burial will follow at Allendale Cemetery, North Route 1, Allendale, IL next to her husband.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Allendale First Christian Church or Allendale Ruritanettes.
